MEKHOO & ZIZI SAPA HOMESTAY OVERVIEW
Owned and operated by the kindest family belonging to the Hmong people, just meeting them alone was such a pleasure. Whether you are going to be hiking, exploring by bike, or just staying put and relaxing-this family goes out of their way to make your stay the best that it can be.
The homestay is located up on a hill-literally on the rice terraces-that overlooks the valley below, and all of the lights on the mountains as they twinkle at night.
There are both private rooms and dorms, both clean, spacious, and simple but gorgeous.
Breakfast is included everyday, and throughout the day they serve food, coffee, smoothies, and an amazing family dinner every night.
The family is also extremely helpful with anything you might need, from renting motorbikes, to tours and taxis.
Did I mention that room rates go from $3 for dorms and $4 for privates? It sounds too good to be true, but it absolutely is.
THE HMONG PEOPLE
The indigenous group is mainly found in Southern China, but as they spill into the mountains of Northern Vietnam, over a million Hmong people live in the country in several subgroups. They speak Hmong-Mien languages, the women wear these gorgeous colorful traditional outfits, and they have stuck to following their traditions and heritage for hundreds of years. They’re fascinating, wise, and so kind, I felt so welcomed.
HOW TO GET TO MEKHOO & ZIZI HOMESTAY
Sapa is easily accessible by both bus and train from many areas in the north of the country. Getting to Sapa is simple, and Mekhoo & Zizi Homestay is about a 10-15 minute drive outside of the commercial center of the town.
When you arrive at the center of Sapa at the bus or train station, taxis are available to give you a ride at any time of the day or night.
The homestay can also arrange you a ride from the center (usually much cheaper than taxis)-I arrived around 3am and they sent a ride for me and it was so kind and convenient. I was also able to check in at 3am, which is a huge plus and at times hard to swing.
SIDE NOTE: Even though the homestay is further out from the center, there is still beautiful restaurants and stores two seconds down the road. It is also so much more beautiful, relaxed and authentic further out from the center.
TREKKING WITH MEKHOO & ZIZI HOMESTAY
Being in such a beautiful place, the family offers many different trekking options for everyone of all ages, all being personal and intimate no matter the level of difficulty. It is also cheaper than trekking with a tour company, and so great to support the family.
