THE BLUE HOLE MINERAL SPRING, JAMAICA

During my time in Jamaica, we opted for a more real, authentic experience away from the resorts and touristy beaches-we stayed a little further west than Negril with the most amazing family that had an unreal house right on the water. One of my favorite days during this trip to Jamaica was the day that we went out to the Blue Hole Mineral Spring, it was so unbelievably beautiful and so much fun.

There are several different “blue swimming holes” around the island, 5 to be exact. The difference between the Blue Hole Mineral Spring compared to the other spots is that this is actually in an unreal limestone cave 23 feet below the ground.

THE BLUE HOLE MINERAL SPRING OVERVIEW

Around 30 minutes southeast of Negril, the Blue Hole Mineral Spring is in the tiny village of Revival, somewhat out in the middle of nowhere.

Not only is there the mineral hole, there is a little bar and restaurant with fun music, a pool that is fed by the same spring, a massage center, and a big weed growing site on top of the hill and the hotel building overlooking the Caribbean.

You can climb down the latter into the cave, or you can jump from a couple of different heights. Cliff jumping in Jamaica was one of my favorite things to do so of course I was jumping without any hesitation.

As of 2022, the price to be able to jump in was $10, and of course the profits go towards preserving the hole for everyone and keeping the business running.

HOW TO GET TO THE BLUE HOLE MINERAL SPRING

The mineral spring is relatively close to Negril, but since there are not many roads around this part of the island, it takes a little while to get there. The roads are windy and sometimes bumpy and narrow, but the surroundings are so beautiful and so interesting out in the rural parishes.

It will be about a 30 minute drive out if you are from Negril, and maybe an hour and a half drive from Montego Bay.

As everyone is so unbelievably kind in Jamaica, before we could even start to think about finding a ride to the Blue Hole, we found one. The sweet woman that was our waitress for a couple of breakfasts at the beach bar down the road immediately called a family member that was a taxi driver to take us, and the driver that drove us from Montego Bay out past Negril offered as well.

The ride was so much fun as the driver kept pulling over to say hello to people and giving us the history and run down of the little villages that we passed through. I don’t remember how much it cost us to hitch a ride with him, but I do remember thinking that he was not asking for enough at all, and that he was too kind.

HITCHING A RIDE:

Like we did, it is so easy to grab a ride from a taxi in Negril or wherever you might be staying, there will be plenty of drivers willing to take you and show you around as well. You can also ask your accommodation for a driver’s number, and I can guarantee you that they will give you at least one.

Our driver was so kind enough to even stay at the Blue Hole during our couple of hours there, so remember that it is necessary to plan a ride back before hand as again, it really is out in the middle of nowhere.

TAKING A DAY TOUR:

Though it is really easy to visit the Mineral Spring without booking and taking a whole day tour, it is convenient to arrange one if you are planning on visiting with a bigger group, or if you’re making some more stops around the area-but these will be much more expensive.

There are a number of some tours around the island that will bring you to the Blue Hole Mineral Spring, and I will always urge to really try to choose having locals show you around instead of people working for larger companies that will give you less of an authentic time.

The seemingly best tours to the Blue Hole are:

Venturing out to see this during our time on the island was beyond a good idea, I had such a fun time. The locals and people that were working and hanging out there were so awesome and so kind as well! I would really really recommend taking a day away from the beautiful beaches on the coast to venture inland to visit.
